ROOTS OF KINECO

Mycelium material innovations.

Kineco was founded to drive innovation in mycelium with a core mission to valorize residual materials from Mycelium Materials Europe’s operations. Over time, the company has evolved through multiple development phases, investing in technology, research, and development. Today, Kineco focuses on three key product areas: mycelium foam, fabric, and substrate. Kineco transforms mycelium and its by-products into sustainable alternatives to traditional foams and high-quality substrate.

THE FARM

We grow the future, sheet by sheet.

We are a pioneering Dutch agrotech start-up committed develop large-scale sustainable mycelium production that prioritize environmental responsibility and innovation. Founded by a team of expert professionals with extensive backgrounds in the food industry, we harness the unique properties of mushroom technology to cultivate mycelium — the intricate root-like structure of fungi that plays a crucial role in the ecosystem. Through our innovative processes, we transform this natural resource into high-performance materials that can be utilized across various industries, from fashion and packaging to construction.

Harvested mycelium

To bring our vision to life, we have retrofitted a former mushroom farm located in Ammerzoden, the Netherlands. This transformation has enabled us to create the largest and most efficient mycelium materials facility in Europe, setting a new standard for sustainable production. Our vertical farm spans an impressive 1.5 million square feet, where mycelium thrives in a controlled environment, growing above ground into a soft, cloud-like bed of fungal fibers. This unique growing method not only maximizes space but also enhances the efficiency of the cultivation process, ensuring that we can meet the growing demand for sustainable materials.

Our cultivation process is efficient; within just two weeks, the mycelium reaches maturity and is harvested, followed by a drying phase that prepares it for further processing. The dried mycelium is then precisely cut into foam sheets, a versatile material that can be adapted for various applications.

However, our commitment to sustainability doesn’t end with the production of foam. We take great care to ensure that every offcut generated during the cutting process is repurposed into mycelium-based fabric, minimizing waste and maximizing resource utilization. Additionally, the leftover substrate from our production is creatively transformed by our customers into sustainable packaging solutions and eco-friendly panels, further demonstrating our dedication to a circular economy. At every step of our production process, we actively valorize waste and continuously push the boundaries of biofabrication. By cultivating a circular future, we aim to redefine material production and consumption, one sheet at a time.
